JULIAN STUP
Julian Stup is a master printmaker whose work explores the continuity of the human form across historical and spiritual divides. Born in Poland in 1948 and a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Stup immigrated to Israel in 1979, bringing with him a rigorous foundation in classical relief techniques.
His practice is defined by a meticulous, multi-layered approach to linocut and woodcut. By developing unique stencil-based methods that mimic the density of screen printing through manual relief carving, Stup creates a "disrupted reality" where ancient icons and modern street figures coexist. His work often navigates the tension between the sacred and the mundane, drawing inspiration from biblical narratives, archival iconography, and the quiet observations of daily life.
A long-standing member of the Tel Aviv Artists’ House Print Workshop, Stup continues to work from his studio in Rehovot, where he bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary conceptual inquiry.
